How can you get something from nothing?

Speaking at the Berkeley Physics Oppenheimer Lecture, Stephen Hawking said he now believes the universe spontaneously popped into existence from nothing!

How can you get something from nothing? It doesn’t make any sense at all…

I think you are making this too difficult for yourself.

First, you have to ask yourself, “What is something” It is physical, right? Something you can see, touch and smell.

Then ask, “What is nothing?” It is something non-physical, right? Something you can’t see, touch or smell, because it hasn’t appeared yet (it doesn’t exist).

A fart doesn’t exist until it explodes in to existence. Small farts expand and collapse, very quickly. Leaving nothing behind, as if they never even existed.

Huge “Big Bang”” farts on the other hand expand very rapidly, producing solids from seemingly nowhere!

The universe is just a huge cosmic fart. The faster something expands — more solids.
